Youth Mentors Needed

Description and Details

Are you fun, approachable and easy going? Do you enjoy giving back to others? Can you relate to young people? If you are seeking a rewarding opportunity to positively impact a young person's life, this could be the perfect position for you! We are in particular need of male mentors at this time, although diversity is encouraged.

About Our Program

StepStones' Youth in Transition Mentoring Program, offered in partnership with Pelletier Youth in Transition, is looking for diverse energetic individuals who would like to mentor youth leaving foster care or group homes. This program focuses on youth aged 15-24, and offers participants the opportunity to develop critical life skills as well as accomplish identified program goals by pairing youth with caring adult mentors.

Eligible youth include:

1) Youth aging-out of foster care and/or have a history with child protection services

2) youth with little to no support in their lives

3) youth in a state of transition and in need of support.

The goal of the program is to create natural long-lasting relationships with responsible young adult professionals who will support and assist youth in their transition to adulthood. It is intended to foster mentoring relationships in which youth may develop confidence, build leadership and communication skills, as well as develop ties to their community.

Volunteer Role

You will be asked to meet with a youth at least once every 2-3 weeks for approximately 3-4 hours at a time. A minimum two-year commitment is required (but we prefer it if you treat this as an even longer term commitment to the youth). During your meetups with your mentee, you may attend workshops put on by StepStones and/or engage in fun activities such as attending a movie, going for lunch, attending a festival, going ice skating, rock climbing, sports event and/or other low cost activities in the city. During most sessions the mentor and mentee would also be expected to work towards some of the goals created at the beginning of their union. Examples include resume writing, job search, registering for school, learning how to cook, connecting with services in the community, etc.

Training

You will be asked to attend three training sessions, complete a vulnerable sector police check, and provide professional references before you become a mentor.
