Volunteer Coordinator

Organisation Profile:

The Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto’s east end that houses the Social Gardener Café, Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre, Riverdale Gallery, event and work spaces, and a rooftop and rainwater garden, among other environmental initiatives. We offer an innovative green work environment to progressive organizations and individuals where we provide opportunities and training to immigrant, refugee and marginalized women and youth – creating bridge between minority groups and mainstream communities. Role Profile/Impact Statement:

The Volunteer Coordinator of the Food Security Program ensures the successful initial placement and ongoing management of volunteers within all areas of the program in positions. The volunteer roles and programs will be designed to contribute to the collective well-being and learnings of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator’s work will support improvement in food security in the Gerrard and Coxwell neighbourhood in areas including:

  • Greater ability of all volunteers to produce food within the neighbourhood Improved access to and affordability of nutritious and culturally appropriate food
  • Broad understanding of the impact of food on the environment
  • Higher overall community engagement through fun and challenging activities
  • Economic development through food

Personal Gain:

This position provides the opportunity to gain experience managing and working with volunteers, project management and event planning, while developing administrative and communications skills. It also provides the individual with experience volunteering for a community organisation, as well as developing a greater knowledge of food security and urban agriculture.

Hours Needed/Timing During Week/Seasonality:

Efforts are ongoing, with highest commitment being at start of program development; Expected hours are approximately 10 / week

Tasks to Complete:

  • Assist in designing volunteer positions and descriptions for local residents
  • Advertise and recruit volunteers for all roles Interview volunteer applicants
  • Build volunteer schedules and coordinate attendance
  • Manage volunteers (or assign oversight) at all scheduled workbees (2-3 times/week)
  • Ensure that tracking of hours, activities, and harvest results for all volunteers (review each week along with garden coordinator)
  • Ensure training and support for volunteers
  • Oversee Veggie Bucks initiative for recognizing volunteer efforts
  • Create detailed events plan for all volunteer activities

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • A commitment to and understanding of food security and environmental issues
  • Experiences in recruiting and leading volunteer activities
  • Experience organizing public events
  • Experience in workshop design and delivery
  • Ability to adjust shifts to evenings where required
