Research & Content Development Coordinator

Organisation Profile:

The Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto’s east end that houses the Social Gardener Café, Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre, Riverdale Gallery, event and work spaces, and a rooftop and rainwater garden, among other environmental initiatives. We offer an innovative green work environment to progressive organizations and individuals where we provide opportunities and training to immigrant, refugee and marginalized women and youth – creating bridge between minority groups and mainstream communities. We work within the values of inclusiveness, sustainability and social justice.

Utilizing many of the resources above, we are in the process of developing a comprehensive Food Security Program which aims to improve the social, economic, environmental and health inequalities associated with food insecurity.

Role Profile/Impact Statement:

The Research & Content Development Coordinator of the Food Security Program is responsible for conducting research and developing the content of the program that will be used in workshops and events.

The Research & Content Development Coordinator’s work will support improvement in food security in the Gerrard and Coxwell neighbourhood in areas including:

  • Greater ability to produce food within the neighbourhood Improved access to and affordability of nutritious and culturally appropriate food
  • Broad understanding of the impact of food on the environment
  • Higher overall community engagement Economic development through food

Personal Gain:

This position provides the opportunity to demonstrate and gain research experience, along with developing content development skills which include writing and workshop planning. It also provides the individual with experience volunteering for a community organisation, as well as developing a greater knowledge of food security and urban agriculture.

Hours Needed/Timing During Week/Seasonality:

Efforts are ongoing, with highest commitment being at start of program development; Expected hours are 5-15 / week (hours can be flexible)

Tasks to Complete:

  • Research topics for workshops on any or all of: urban farming, gardening, composting, sustainability, food preparation, etc.
  • Help to develop workshop presentations designed for career development in the food industry
  • Help to develop public workshops
  • Assist with creating communications content to the Riverdale Hub neighbourhood

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of or interest in food security, growing food, sustainability, urban planning, or other similar topics
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint or equivalent software
  • Experience with internet research
  • Willingness to tailor research and presentations to the needs of the target audience
