Position Summary:

As a volunteer income tax preparer with the WoodGreen Community Services - Financial Empowerment Program, you will:

* Participate in detailed income tax training hosted by WoodGreen, as well as web-based volunteer training provided by CRA

* Help clients submit their tax returns using UFile software

* Provide support and high quality customer service to a diverse group of clients

* Provide explanation of tax return to clients and answer client tax related questions

* Follow policies set by the Canada Revenue Agency and WoodGreen Community Services 

* If applicable, volunteers may be asked to perform interpretation services for clients who have limited English-speaking skills. 

Program Overview:

WoodGreen's Financial Empowerment Program serves to both alleviate and help people transition out of poverty by leading in the use of innovative approaches to directly address problems in the financial dimensions of the lives of low-income individuals. One of the ways we serve clients is through our annual Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) in partnership with the Canada Revenue Agency. WoodGreen?s CVITP has a tremendous impact on the community: we serve over 5,000 clients completing over 7,000 tax returns. Our volunteers help us put millions of dollars back into the community by ensuring marginalized populations have access to professional, free tax filing services and in turn access vital financial benefits.

As an Income Tax Preparer Volunteer, you will work in a fast-paced environment to provide a critical service to a diverse group of clients. Through this opportunity, you will have the ability to connect to your community and make a difference. At our income tax clinic, we work in a group setting allowing you to meet and connect with a large group of volunteers. We offer reference letters to all committed volunteers and provide TTC tokens for each volunteer shift. 

Qualifications: 

* Effective computer and technology skills; experience working with UFile is an asset

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

* Familiarity with basic tax documents and policies related to Canadian tax system

* Experience filing taxes in Canada is considered an asset 

* Comfortable working with a diverse group of volunteers and clients 

* Punctual and committed

* Attend mandatory 6-hour training session held in late January or early February

* Commit to two 3-hour volunteer shifts per week 

* Second language is an asset

Commitment: 

Volunteers are an integral part of the income tax clinic. Your gift of time, talent and energy is crucial to the success of the organization. We require volunteers to commit to at least two 3-hour shifts per week for a minimum of 9-weeks starting February 23, 2019 and ending April 30, 2019. Both evening and weekend shifts are available. 

Shift Times and Locations:

Once the 2019 Tax Season schedule is confirmed, we will provide volunteers with a listing of available days, locations and shift times. 

Regular volunteer shifts location include:

* 815 Danforth Avenue

* 840 Coxwell Avenue

* 1533 Victoria Park Avenue

* 4040 Lawrence Avenue East

Rotating Community locations include:

* Housing locations where WoodGreen Community Service provide service

* Toronto Public Libraries 

Shift times are usually:

* Morning Shift - 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

* Afternoon Shift - 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm OR 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm 

* Evening Shift - 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Background Screening:

Please note that a Vulnerable Sector Screening is required for this role prior to working with clients.  WoodGreen will process this for you if you do not have a VSS that has been issued within 12 months from the date of interview.  Depending on your address, there may be a charge for this service as levied by your police jurisdiction.
