Description and Details:

University Settlement provides English Conversation skills workshops for newcomers to learn conversation, communication and build community connections.  Volunteers will dedicate their time in facilitating the workshops and will have an interest in learning and sharing cultural experiences.  Volunteers will also have the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills, public speaking skills, presentation skills and facilitation skills.


  • Work collaboratively with the Settlement counsellors in researching and developing lesson plans
  • Facilitate workshops using a variety of activities to engage diverse service users
  • Provide a friendly and welcoming environment to service users
  • Complete weekly attendance



  • Must be 21 years of age and up and have excellent literacy skills
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, as well as a second language commonly used by clientele ? Mandarin and Cantonese
  • Effective facilitation skills, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent understanding of cultural and social background of immigrant families
  • Must be available to volunteer once a week for 3 hours with a minimum commitment of 3 months
