Board Member - St. John the Compassionate Mission
St. John the Compassionate Mission is seeking a Board member.
Our purpose is to be and to build an inclusive community through the gifts and the needs that each of us brings. This community of love is a place of healing and nourishment occurring through awakening the God-given dignity and value of each person, while responding to each person's needs.
About Our Charity:
St. John the Compassionate Mission, a charitable non-profit organization, was established in Toronto's east end in 1987 providing meals and a wide range of programs to marginalized individuals in a nurturing community setting. St. John's also runs an award-winning Bakery and Thrift Shop - social enterprises which provide valuable work experience, training, and dignity for workers, many of whom were homeless or on social assistance. The Mission is run by staff with help from numerous volunteers who all help each other to act as one team.
The Mission is open to all - most come from South Riverdale, an area that contains a dense population of individuals and families who are considered to be living on the fringes of society and whom other community organizations are not equipped to support. Since its inception, St. John's has provided a stable, caring, healthy, and joyful environment that promotes and assists personal development.
St. John the Compassionate Mission reaches out to the community in many ways: services include Drop-in Programs, supportive and spiritual counselling, Winter Breakfast Program, weekly Health Bus, assistance with housing, Diabetic Clinics, Foot Care, Summer Camps, and Sunday Suppers. 'Kettle of Fish' offers programs such as Food for Families, Community Dinners, Walking Group and Kidz Klub for children on Saturdays. Additional Mission programs are offered at the St. Mary of Egypt Refuge and St. Xenia House.
Requirements of Board Members:
Board members should be able to prepare for and attend monthly Board Meetings in person or by teleconference, and to perform any follow up tasks. Board meetings are held monthly onsite at 155 Broadview Avenue, north of Queen Street.
Board members must believe in the mission and goals of the Mission and respect the confidentiality of information related to the work, donors and community members.
Board Members should have a basic understanding of financial reports such as budgets, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, etc.
