Construction and Carpentry Volunteer

Description

Toronto Wildlife Centre is looking for skilled volunteers with experience in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting or general maintenance to assist in a variety of projects from cage construction, retrofitting and renovating portables into animal care rooms, to general repairs at our new Rouge Park location (located around Steeles Ave. East and Markham Road in Scarborough - please note that this site is not easily accessible by public transit, volunteers will need to arrange their own transportation to and from their shift). This position may be ideal for volunteers who would like to contribute to wildlife rehabilitation but have a busy schedule, are unable to commit to a regular shift or cannot meet the commitment length of other roles at TWC.
Requirement

- 18 years of age or older

- Some demonstrated experience in one of the following fields: carpentry, electrical, plumbing or painting

- Familiarity and comfort using power tools

- Interest in and respect for the needs of wild animal

- Non-profit volunteer experience is an asset

Time Commitment

- Weekly volunteers are needed 1 day per week Mondays-Fridays (9:00am-4:00pm) for a minimum of 3 months

- Corporate or Group volunteer events may be scheduled on weekdays (9:00am-4:00pm) or Saturdays (one Saturday per month will be designated for this programming)

Training

Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to train volunteers in trades, skills or vocations they do not already possess.

COVID RESPONSE

- All Construction volunteers will be provided with all required PPE including face masks, face shields, disposable gloves, and any other supplies that may be mandatory when working within 2 metres of another volunteer or staff member. COVID protocols are followed based on all recommendations from Toronto Public Health for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Volunteers will be asked to complete a sign-in log and perform a self-assessment for COVID symptoms prior to each shift. If a volunteer is feeling unwell, they will be asked to cancel their shifts and self-isolate or get tested for COVID-19 based on advice from Public Health.

If you would like to organize a corporate or community group volunteer day, please email volunteers@torontowildlifecentre.com directly. Group volunteer days are scheduled for a maximum of 25 participants (or fewer depending on specific COVID regulations at that particular time) and all those assisting must be 18+.
