School Food Farmers Market Leaders

Flexible, Partially Remote Volunteer Opportunities for Youth

April 2021

We are looking for volunteer Market Leaders to join Waterloo Region School Food Gardens (WRSFG), a nonprofit organization in Waterloo ON. As a Market Leader, you will work alongside staff and other high school students to create and execute our School Food Farmers market for the 2021 season. This market, piloted in 2019 and postponed for 2020 due to COVID-19, aims to provide fresh, affordable produce to those in Waterloo Region while giving young people an opportunity to learn about local food systems and sustainable urban agriculture.

What You’ll Do

You’ll work with other, like-minded high school students to turn this concept into a reality for 2021. There are both remote and in-person positions available, and the project is very much self-directed in terms of how you can get involved. Some of the possible roles include:
- Marketing
- Graphic design
- Coordination and outreach (including sourcing produce from farms and local personal, community, and school gardens)
- Garden maintenance and harvesting
- Market set-up and take down
- Education and customer service.

Our current objective is to have at least three market days for 2021: one in each June, July, and August.

What We are Looking For

No prior experience is required! We accept and encourage any high school students with an interest in sustainable food systems to get involved. The following are required:

- You must currently be a high school student, or entering high school in September 2021 (aged 13-19);
- Have strong communication skills and the ability to work well with others.

Depending on the role, the following could be required:

- Access to a computer (desktop or laptop) and Internet;
- Ability to participate in collaborative group meetings with other Market Leaders throughout the duration of the project;
- Be located in or around Waterloo Region.

There is no minimum time requirement for this project. Roles span from April to August 2021 and each role carries with it different obligations. Our goal is to provide a flexible and self-driven atmosphere where you’re free to explore your interests, gain new skills, and ultimately contribute to what we see as being a pretty cool initiative! Ideally, you’ll have some interest in gardening, food literacy, and sustainability. Preference will be given to those located in or near Waterloo Region who can attend the garden maintenance and market days, but we can accommodate those who can only work remotely.

Are You Ready?

Please submit a form through our volunteer page: https://seeds.ca/schoolfoodgardens/volunteer-opportunities/

If there are particular roles you’re keen on, let us know. Otherwise, we’ll work to find position(s) that suit your interests.

Let’s get growing!
