Description

The Aphasia Connect Volunteer facilitates online discussions and conversations between clients by learning and applying virtual supportive communication strategies. Volunteers participate in collaboration with a MODC/After Stroke staff member. Commitment is 1-2 hours per week.

Tasks:

● Participate in the Aphasia Connect virtual group on a weekly basis.
● Assist the MODC/After Stroke staff member by welcoming clients and co-hosting large-group discussions.
● Using a variety of virtual supportive communication strategies, independently facilitate and encourage enjoyable social interactions between clients in break-out sessions.
● Enable clients to take part in social conversations by being observant of those needing more communication support.
● Participate in pre/post session meetings as well as de-brief meetings (as scheduled) with a MODC/After Stroke staff member.
● Prepare and share resources for the group, as directed by staff.
● Be aware of the boundaries of your role and use supervision to clarify when uncertainties arise.

Requirements:

• Comfortable using the features of a virtual meeting platform or willing to learn
• Access to a device with webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection
• Ability to take initiative
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Empathetic and patient
• Respectful, polite, helpful
