Description

The Pathways to Education Program requires skilled and committed Virtual Volunteer Tutors. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative program, which can make a positive difference in the lives of youth and their families. We are always looking for tutors with expertise in core subjects such as English, Math, French and Science. Recruitment is ongoing. Join the dedicated team of Pathways volunteers and you will see how your time contribution will make a difference in the lives of Rexdale’s (Jamestown) youth.

We look for people who demonstrate passion for their role, dedication and commitment to our students. Above all, our volunteers must:

• Have an interest to work with high school youth
• Provide a non-biased, open approach
• Be willing to learn, identify and understand youth behaviours
• Be flexible and a team player
• Committed to take on a leadership role
• Be serious about their volunteer commitment
• Be patient, respectful and act within the boundaries outlined in their role description
• Have energy and enthusiasm
• Competent in one of the core subjects in high school
• Possess a desire to make a difference in someone’s life!

Why be a Tutor? When you're a Tutor you are more than a role model. Having a positive figure in life helps youth and young adults:

• Stay in school and succeed
• How to positively cope and deal with negative behaviours and influences
• Be successful academically and pursue post-secondary options.

Volunteer Requirements and Process

• Tutor’s Responsibilities
• Responsible adults 20 years of age and older
• Complete all training requirements
• Commit a minimum of 3 hours per week
• Work responsibly and effectively with grade 9-12 students
• Adhere to an anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework
• Serve as a positive role model for our youth
• Maintain a positive attitude and remain patient when working with potentially challenging students
• Commit to regular attendance, and take responsibility to inform us in advance of any absences
• Familiarly with Ontario curriculum an asset
• Competency in one of the subjects taught in high school

Screening:
• In-person interview
• Program orientation
• Complete the volunteer intake package
• Vulnerable sector criminal background check (done free of charge)
• Provide Two reference checks

Training:
• Tutoring Handbook to read
• Creating an effective and efficient tutoring environment
• Relationships and boundaries
• Confidentiality and disclosures
• How to approach difficult behaviours
• One mandatory 2 hour in-person training session

Valid Vulnerable Sector Check is Mandatory.
