About the position:

We are seeking caring and compassionate individuals who can provide companionship and social support to socially isolated seniors. Your time will help to reduce their loneliness and improve their quality of life.

Commitment:

Your gift of time, talent and energy is crucial to the success of this program. We require volunteers to commit to one or two hours per week for a 3-month minimum period. Being consistently reliable is a key attribute of this position.

Location:

Staff support and training will take place at 840 Coxwell Avenue 3rd Floor Seniors Active Living Centre. The remainder of this role will take place in the senior?s home or an agreed upon place in Toronto?s East End community.

 

What you will be doing:

  • Visit clients in their home (or an agreed upon location) on a weekly basis and motivate them to participate in social recreational activities within the neighborhood.

  • Work with clients to establish short and long term goals to support independence, social connections and improve quality of life

  • Engage in friendly conversation and plan weekly leisure activities that provide cognitive stimulation through reading, writing, crafts, games, outings and various social activities.

  • Facilitate a home support exercise program with frail, homebound seniors (Training will be provided).

  • Provide information to clients to appropriate services within WoodGreen and other external community services.

  • Follow WoodGreen?s policies and procedures, adhere to the Client Bill of Rights and follow program specific guidelines.

  • Record and submit monthly hours/activities and report any incidences, accidents or concerns to the Program Coordinator.

What we are seeking:

  • 18 years of age or older.

  • Excellent communication and active listening skills, empathy, patience, tactful.

  • Good knowledge about and sensitivity to ageing issues and challenges.

  • Ability to be self-directed, independent, flexible and exercise good judgment

  • Enjoys interacting with seniors with a desire to encourage them to stay socially connected in the community.

  • Creative about mutually enjoyable activities and leisure pursuits.

  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and build strong working relationships.

 

Training:

  • Orientation to WoodGreen?s programs, policies, and procedures.

  • Home Support Exercise Program

  • Ongoing training opportunities for volunteers

Shift Times:

Volunteer shifts will vary depending on your availability and the client.  The majority of our clients prefer to meet during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm)

 

Background Screening:

Please note that a Vulnerable Sector Check is required for this role prior to working with clients.  WoodGreen will process this for you if you do not have a VSS that has been issued within 12 months from the date of interview.  Depending on your address, there may be a charge for this service as levied by your police jurisdiction.
