East York Learning Experience (EYLE) is a non-profit, community-based, adult literacy program that has been serving the East York, East Toronto and West Scarborough neighbourhoods since 1987. We help adults improve their reading, writing, and/or basic math skills by matching them with trained volunteer tutors from the community. In addition, we offer training in basic computer skills. We provide resources and ongoing support to help them overcome the social and economic barriers associated with low literacy levels. Our services are free.
Our volunteer tutors meet with students once a week for two hours in order to work on reading, writing, math and computer literacy. Sessions take place at our office at 266 Donlands Avenue. Our hours of operation are Mondays & Tuesdays 9-9, Wednesdays & Thursdays 9-5. We are closed on Fridays and weekends. We ask volunteers for a one year commitment.
All volunteers must undergo training before being matched with one of our students. These training sessions provide a general orientation to adult literacy, as well as introduction to our processes and some of the materials in our program.
Our next training sessions will take place on:
February 7, 2019 (Thursday);
February 13, 2019 (Wednesday); and
February 21, 2019 (Thursday)
Space is limited, so please call or email now to be added to our list. All sessions are held from 6:30-9:30 pm at our office at 266 Donlands Avenue.
We ask that prospective tutors attend all three sessions, as they are cumulative. Please register now to set up a time for you to come in and meet with one of our staff members before the start of the training sessions.
